CHAPTER 2
Patrina suddenly felt the weight of Coleâs response on every inch of her shoulders. For some reason, she felt she needed to prepare for what he was about to say. Maybe she could tell from the way he was looking at her, with heated lust in his eyes. Or it could have possibly been the sudden shift in the air surrounding them, releasing something primal, something uninhibited, something better left capped, that warned her what could be coming. She just hoped he didnât say what she thought he was thinking.
Since Perryâs death many men had attempted to date herâcolleagues, friends of friends, guys Dale had introduced her to. None had succeeded. She preferred living an existence where she was not involved in a relationship, serious or otherwise, with any man. It was hard for some of her admirers to understand her position. They wouldnât take no for an answer. But none, she inwardly admitted, was as persistent as the man staring at her now.
She studied his expression and exhaled slowly. Heâd made his statement and now it was time for her to ask what he meant by it. She walked farther into the room, paused by the table and asked her question. âAnd what else do you need, Cole?â
He didnât answer right away and she was aware that he was trying to decide if he really should. Good. Let him think about it. Some things were better left unsaid. She wasnât born yesterday and she had been a married woman at one time. She recognized the vibes, the tingle and the heat of lust. She knew enough about male testosterone and how it could get the best of a man sometimes. And she knew how not to become a victim when it got out of hand.
âI need company.â
She blinked upon realizing that Cole had spoken. She studied his expression, searched his eyes. âCompany?â
âYes, company. I didnât like eating alone.â
She had a sinking feeling that wasnât what heâd originally planned to say. She appreciated the fact that he had thought his answer through first. He didnât know her and there was a lot she didnât know about him. The only thing that was certain was the sexual chemistry between them. She was old enough and mature enough to recognize it for what it was worth. She was realistic enough to accept their attraction for what it wasâwasted energy. The last thing she planned on doing was getting involved in an affair destined to go nowhere. Sheâd been married for five years to a wonderful man, was now a widow and wasnât interested in changing that status. Besides, Cole was a lawman, for heavenâs sake.
âI told you why I didnât stay. I had things to do in the kitchen,â she finally said, frowning and wondering if he was one of those self-absorbed men greedy for attention and looking for any willing female to give it to him.
âI want to get to know you better.â
She saw the smile that touched his lips and the twinkle in his dark eyes.
